The Wrong Bitch
Trans identity isn’t synonymous with passivity
I saw a video the other day of a tall, gorgeous trans woman in Thailand, being harassed by, what looks like, an American cis woman. It’s not clear exactly what the aggressor is saying to her, but what is clear is the aggression. She hates this beautiful trans woman. She’s apoplectic that such audacity, to live one’s life authentically and without concern from people like her, is possible. Meanwhile, the entire time, this supermodel tries her best to keep her distance.
She doesn’t shout back, or even make intentional eye contact. She backs away, all the way camera-right, but the cis woman keeps coming - barrelling forwards in what seems to be drunk entitlement. She probably came to oggle the ‘Ladyboys’ - mistaking this goddess for the same sort who danced with her on her hen night so many years ago. A figure she feels comfortable to touch. She’s wrong.
The drunk throws the first punch. She pushes into the Thai woman’s face - no provocation. Just physically compressed hatred, finding its way out. Unintelligence. Proof enough that empathy isn’t passed down through the chromosomes. She thinks she’s found a mark. Someone that she can look down on. An opportunity to be the bully. To let off some steam. Well, she picked the wrong bitch, so to speak. Trans identity isn’t synonymous with passivity. Those most at threat have the right, and duty, to defend themselves. Because so often, we have to. People don’t always step in for us. Except this time? This time you miscalculated, girl. You didn’t bet on friends. On a community.
I don’t especially like to see anyone get physically harmed. I don’t endorse violence. But it’s happened now, so excuse me while I relish in the shaudenfreude a little bit. If there was ever a clearer demonstration of why you should let people be, this is it. Consider it an allegory. Proof that any person can only be pushed so far. This video isn’t an isolated event. It’s everything. We’re all being taunted. We’re all being squared up to and having it pushed in our faces. And we all have our limit, don’t we?
